Shreya Ghoshal’s five most loved Hindi songs

MCAI - 31 Mar 2022

Multi award-winning playback singer Shreya Ghoshal is, without doubt, not only one of the most popular voices in Bollywood but also one of the most talented. Having sung in over 18 languages including Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri and Punjabi, Shreya Ghoshal is a name adored by music lovers across the globe.

Always wanting to become a playback singer; Ghoshal began taking music lessons when she was only four years old. Her break occurred when she won the television singing reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’ at the tender age of sixteen, and was noticed by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s mother, Leela Bhansali. Making her debut in in Bollywood as a fully-fledged playback singer in 2002, Ghoshal this year completes 20 years in the industry.

To mark her 38th birthday, looks back at Ghoshal’s five most memorable songs.

Bairi Piya from ‘Devdas’ (2002)
This honey-soaked rendition truly launched the young Ghoshal into the limelight, making her the first and till date the only singer to win both the Filmfare and National Film Awards for her debut song. Incredibly, Ghoshal recorded this whole song in a single take, without even knowing that she was being recorded, and that too whilst trying to revise for her higher secondary exams.

Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai from ‘Jism’ (2003)
Just one year after her debut, Ghoshal proved that she was not just a one song wonder by winning the Best Playback Singer (Female) Award at almost all the major award ceremonies for this song, being praised especially for her vocal and emotional range.

Teri Ore from ‘Singh is Kinng’ (2008)
The sole love ballad in this film, this beautiful melodious romantic love song sung by Ghoshal and Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, blew everyone away. From its warm lyrics, to the memorable musical arrangement by Pritam, this song had it all. Picturised on Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, romancing away between the pyramids in Egypt, Ghoshal’s voice had even the best of us wanting to take our significant others to the African country for a spot of Bollywood dancing.

Sunn Raha Hai from ‘Aashiqui 2’ (2013)
Considering the songs from the original ‘Aashiqui’ (1990) are widely regarded as one of the greatest Bollywood soundtracks of all time, launching the successful careers of Kumar Sanu and music directors Nadeem-Shravan, it’s fair to say the pressure was pretty intense for the team at ‘Aashiqui 2’ to get it right. And thankfully – it did not disappoint! Publicised as the love song of the year, Ghoshal’s version of Sunn Raha Hai made all of us teary eyed with the immensely thoughtful and lovelorn number and went on to help her win no less than six Best Playback Singer awards that year.

Deewani Mastani from ‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015)
Hard to believe but this particular song was not intended for Ghoshal but rather for the Monali Thakur. But what turned out to be Thakur’s loss, became Ghoshal’s gain – with this song staying at the number 1 slot in the charts for a consecutive 11 weeks. Regarded as one of Ghoshal’s finest emotive solo performances, the romantic vibe used in this song is very true to the Bhansali style we all have come to know and love. A song made for the ages, this song has been known to be Ghoshal’s favourite to perform in live concerts. are proud to be the exclusive media partners to the Shreya Ghoshal UK Tour March 2022.
