Music is the lifeblood of our existence. It is what we seek when we are stressed, when we relax and when try to have fun. In this Internet age, where the radio is slowly, but surely, going the way of the dinosaur, discovering new music is challenging yet easy at the same time. To be honest, music discovery is a paradox in the Internet Age.

Of course, you will listen to the stuff that is trending on your social media channels, or YouTube or what you'll listen to at nightclubs or pubs, but if you have a unique taste, which doesn't get fulfilled because of mainstream stuff that is being played then you are in luck.

We have compiled a list of music services and tools that will help you discover more music - new, old, obscure or remixed. Read on to find out more.

Hype Machine

You probably haven't heard of this nifty service and that's why it heads this list. Hype Machine at its core is a music aggregation blog. You'll find tons of songs spread across genres and various filters - new, old, genre, popular and so forth. While you'll rarely find the original song, you will probably end up getting access to unheard remixes, which always seem to add a new dimension to a song that you've heard many times. It could be good or bad, but you will discover new music.

For the web interface, all you need to do is just sign up, but for the iPhone and Android apps, you need to shell out Rs 250, which is not too bad in case you really care about music. Remember, it is more than just a resource for music as it is also a blog so you will get news, updates and basically a truckload of information about music.

Just a word of advice, Hype Machine gravitates more towards electronic dance music and indie rock, so if you're the type of person who has a liking for some old school classic rock, then this may not be the best place.

Shuffler FM

It describes itself as a 'radio powered by the web's leading taste-maker music sites and blogs' and pretty much is delivering on that promise. Like Hype Machine, it caters popular songs that are trending on the web - on influential music blogs and websites. In addition, it also has dedicated genre specific playlists.

So for electronic music, there is an electronic playlist, there's one for rap and more. The site also features some new cool blogs and websites that offer interesting information about the music that is available on the web.

Lastly, its iOS and Android apps are free and they also allow streaming of music. Basically, the songs that are trending on the homepage can be streamed via the apps. You just need a Facebook login for access to the service.

8tracks

Many times you will have a fair idea what kind of music you want to listen to, but probably you don't want to play a song that you've heard or are just in the mood to listen to something new. So what should you do? Well, 8tracks is your answer.

Chances are, you must've heard about 8tracks, and with good reason. It crowd sources playlists categorized by genres. Even you can create your own playlist.

The great part about 8tracks is that you'll often end up listening to lots of unique new music, that you'd probably not hear on something like Spotify, Google Music, radio or iTunes. As it is integrated with a couple of services like SoundCloud, YouTube, you can easily find the track even when you aren't using 8tracks.

Like most services, it is completely free, though ad-supported. Even on iOS and Android there are free apps, though you can't skip songs at will, and will see a lot of ads on the app.

SoundCloud

SoundCloud is another popular music service that's primarily used by artists to promote their music. Over the years, it has become an incredible resource for music discovery. Often on SoundCloud you will find music that you probably haven't heard on any platform.

The main reason for that is that DJs and musicians upload their content directly on the service and offer it for free to users and followers to listen to. It is a popularity engine of sorts for them. You will often end up hearing different versions of the same song on SoundCloud, because it only exists there not on iTunes or anywhere else.

In the case of upcoming artists and new bands, this is pertinent because often these artists are not managed by an agency and probably don't have the resources or aren't popular enough for their music to be on a big mainstream music platform.
