The nominations for the 2020 Emmy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning (July 28) by former Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones, who was joined, virtually, by Laverne Cox, Josh Gad and Tatiana Maslany. This year's ceremony will be reimagined as a socially distanced event due to the production restrictions imposed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
HBO's dystopian graphic novel adaptation Watchmen topped all nominees with 26 nods, followed by Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (20), Netflix's Ozark (18) and HBO's Succession (18), while Disney+ got into the game in its first year with the Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian tying Saturday Night Live and the final season of Schitt's Creek with 15 each.
Golden Globe and Oscar-winning Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross nabbed two nominations for their work on the song "The Way it Used to Be" for Watchmen (outstanding original music and lyrics) and outstanding music composition for a limited series, movie or special (original dramatic score) for the HBO series.
The Voice was noticed in the reality program, casting for a reality program, contemporary hairstyling for a reality program, period/character hairstyling, lighting design for a variety series, contemporary makeup, competition program and technical direction, while runaway hit The Masked Singer was noticed for outstanding costumes for a variety program and competition program. Labrinth earned two nods for composition work on Euphoria and for writing the tune "All For Us" for the teen drama, whose star, singer/actress Zendaya was noticed for lead actress in a drama series.
The Neptunes' Pharrell and Chad Hugo also got a bid in the original music and lyrics category for their title track "Letter to My Godfather" from The Black Godfather, where they will face off against Ingrid Michaelson's "Build It Up" from Little Fires Everywhere. The Wu-Tang Clan's The RZA got in the mix for his main title theme music for the Hulu doc Wu-Tang: An American Saga.
Netflix set a record with the most nominations in a year with a whopping 160, besting HBO's previous record of 137 in 2019.
The 72nd Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will broadcast Sunday, Sept. 20, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
